Assessment
InTASC Standard #6: The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher's and learner's decision making.

Good teaching is driven by accurate assessments. It's important to realize that some students in a class may already have a firm understanding of the content in a unit and they need to be challenged to a greater extent than those who are on grade level or below. In addition, it is vital that we ensure that our assessments are age appropriate and accessible for all learners. Secondly, it is imperative that assessment includes both formative and summative assessments throughout units. It is much easier to correct misconceptions or offer the necessary support for some students if the teacher realizes these issues early on in a unit instead of waiting until the post-test to recognize the struggles.
The following artifact is a pre-test/post test that I created for a Kindergarten unit on the five senses. For the sake of time, I chose to do this summative assessment with small groups and place dividers in between students. Students are guided through the matching worksheet by descriptions of a situation where they would be using one of their senses. They must match the situation with the appropriate body part. |
