One characteristic of a great teacher is that he or she is continually seeking to learn new educational strategies and techniques to use in the classroom. The power of communication and collaboration can be enormous if teachers simply step out and strive to learn from each other. Teachers owe it to their students to model life-long learning through leadership opportunities and professional growth.
The first image below was taken at the Teachers of Promise Institute in Richmond, VA in the spring of 2017. I had the honor of being selected to attend this event as a representative from Bridgewater College. At TOP, I was able to attend several incredible workshops focusing on a variety of educational topics such as classroom management, resources for teaching, and building strong relationships with students. In addition to the workshops, I participated in intriguing small group discussions regarding current trends in education. The final image is of a small group lesson at a local elementary school's STEM day. At this event, I had the opportunity to teach alongside peers from the Bridgewater Teacher Education Program. We introduced Wonder Workshop robots to elementary students. Planning for this event involved several brainstorming sessions, taking on various leadership roles, and preparing for the event together. I felt that this was a great experience for me, not only to be able to teach a STEM lesson to some awesome kids, but also to be able to work as a group to pull off such a great event. |
