Planning for Instruction
InTASC Standard #7: The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.

In order to present content effectively, one must have a solid understanding of the elements which make up a successful lesson. The teacher must take into consideration the current student knowledge related to the content and plan based on this information. In addition, the teacher must consider the individual accommodations and differentiation that the students will need to be successful in learning the content.
The following lesson plan exhibits my ability to effectively plan a lesson based on the Virginia SOLS. This reading lesson was taught to a third grade class with a wide range of abilities. There were two students with IEPs who struggled in reading. In contrast, there were some students who were above grade level in reading and needed an extra challenge. I was able to effectively differentiate for this group by giving the students the support that they needed through appropriate leveled books. All students were able to feel successful in this lesson because they were each given a book on their individual independent reading levels. |
